Driving while either intoxicated or drunk is dangerous and drivers with high blood alcohol content or concentration (BAC) are at greatly increased risk of car accidents, highway injuries and vehicular deaths. Possible prevention measures examined here include establishing DWI courts, suspending or revoking driver licenses, impounding or confiscating vehicle plates, impounding or immobilizing vehicles, enforcing open container bans, increasing penalties such as fines or jail for drunk driving, and mandating alcohol education. Safety seat belts, air bags, designated drivers, and effective practical ways to stay sober are also discussed.
Although alcohol and drinking have always been an important part of American life and culture, there has long been a strong undercurrent of antagonism toward alcohol. Temperance movements rise and fall and are currently growing. This cultural ambivalence toward alcohol is reflected in our often inconsistent laws regulating the production, marketing, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. The sometimes amusing nature of some of these alcohol laws can be seen at It’s the Law (about Alcohol and Drinking).
Alcohol abuse is a significant problem among young people and a solution needs to be found. This page evaluates prevention programs and identifies effective and ineffective ways to reduce drinking problems among young people, especially high school, college, and university students. The best preventive measures are often the easiest and most economical and can be easily implemented by parents and educators.
